Behind the Screens: Get to Know Ross a Director at Orbits IT
Say hello to Ross, one of our Directors here at Orbits. Ross has been a part of the Orbits journey for the last 11 years and it’s safe to say he’s worn every cap he can. As a director, Ross plays a pivotal role in maintaining the high standards of service that have been the hallmark of our success from the outset. Get to know him more below…
What do you enjoy most about your work?
“The variety. No two days are the same, which keeps things interesting. One minute you’re looking at longer term plans, the next you’re helping a client work through an issue. I also enjoy working with the team and building relationships with clients, especially when you can see the difference you’re making, particularly with some of the non-profits we support.”
What is something your proud of achieving here at Orbits?
“The team itself. We’ve built a solid group of people who care about what they do and back each other up. There’s been a big focus on development as well, whether that’s certifications, apprenticeships, or just giving people the chance to step up. Seeing people grow over time is a big one for me, especially having started out in a similar role.”
How has your role evolved since starting here?
“It’s changed a lot. I started on the service desk, very hands on and focused on day to day support. Over time that’s moved into more leadership and strategy. Now it’s more about supporting the team, looking at the bigger picture, and helping shape where the business is going. It’s been a natural progression as the company has grown.”
How would you describe the team culture?
“Relaxed, but people care about doing things properly. Everyone’s approachable, no big egos, and people are always willing to help each other out. There’s a good sense of humour across the team, which makes the day to day more enjoyable.”
What does a typical workday look like to you?
“There isn’t really a typical day. It’s usually a mix of internal catch ups, client conversations, and looking at ways we can improve things. Some days are more focused on planning, others you get pulled into operational stuff. It keeps things varied.”
Comments from Orbits’ Founder, Jim…
“Ross is a cornerstone of Orbits IT has experienced every facet of of the business over the last 10+ years including heading up his own division with Orbits IT (South West). He is now responsible for the Servicedesk across the organisation, ensuring we continue to deliver the levels of customer service we are known for. No mean feat but one Ross is ideal for.”
Now for the Fun Stuff!
Work hard, play hard — we’ve seen Kal in action, supporting our clients, now let’s peek behind the screen and uncover some of the fun stuff!
If your job had a theme song, what would it be?
“Don’t stop me now’ by Queen, because that’s how my day often goes. Completely on a roll!”
You’re stuck on a desert island with one device. What is it, and how long before it breaks?
“A rugged laptop with satellite internet. Realistically, I’d give it a couple of weeks before something stops working.”
If IT support had a mascot, what would it look like?
“An octopus. Handling lots of things at once and quietly fixing problems in the background.”
