Behind the Screens: Get to Know James our Technical Lead
Say hello to James, our Technical Lead and a familiar face around Orbits IT for the past seven years. Starting out as a First Line Technician, James has worked his way through the ranks, developing his technical expertise and becoming a key part of the team. Whether he’s exploring new tech, supporting colleagues, or helping clients find smarter ways of working, James is always looking ahead. Now, let’s get to know him a little better…
What do you enjoy most about working at Orbits IT?
I enjoy exploring new and emerging technologies and finding ways to unlock their potential. Technology is always evolving, and it’s rewarding to discover solutions that make day-to-day life easier for both our clients and the wider team.
What’s something you’re proud of achieving within the team?
I’ve achieved multiple certifications during my time at Orbits IT, but the achievement I’m proudest of is completing the Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert certification path. It was a challenging journey, but one that significantly strengthened my technical knowledge and expertise.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I’m a huge football fan and have supported Cardiff City for over 20 years. A lot of my weekends are spent following the team and, if I’m honest, usually losing my head while watching them play!
How has your role evolved since starting here?
My journey at Orbits IT started as a First Line Technician, spending my days working through ticket queues and supporting clients over the phone. From there, I progressed into a Second Line role, taking ownership of more complex technical issues and escalations. Over time, that experience led me into my current position as Technical Lead, where I now help guide the technical direction of the team while continuing to support clients and colleagues.
What does a typical workday look like for you?
Controlled chaos! No two days are ever the same at Orbits IT. There are always new challenges, projects, and opportunities to help clients, but one thing stays consistent: delivering the best service we possibly can.
Comments from Jordans manager, James Dunn…
“Jordan has consistently proven to be a highly dependable and integral member of the second-line support team. Over the past three years, we have worked closely together, and our collaboration has always been seamless and productive. Jordan’s deep technical knowledge, combined with his calm and methodical approach, makes him a key point of contact for the team when technical guidance or support is needed.
Now for the Fun Stuff!
Work hard, play hard — we’ve seen James in action on the supporting our clients, now let’s peek behind the screen and uncover some of the fun stuff!
If you weren’t working in IT, what would you be doing?
“When I was younger, I wanted to be an archaeologist. Then I realised there wasn’t much money in it… and now I couldn’t have been in a job further from it!”
Do you prefer light mode or dark mode?
“Dark mode. I’ve got to do what I can to protect my old eyes!”
If IT support had a mascot, what would it look like?
“A juggling, focused laptop. I think most people in IT can relate to that.”
You’re stuck on a desert island with one device — what is it, and how long before it breaks?
“I’d take a phone with a full signal. Hopefully, it would last longer than the time it would take to be rescued.”
