Work Experience – Henry Jones

Introduction

My name is Henry and I am 14 years old doing work experience at Orbits IT (9 February to 13 February) as I wanted to see the IT workplace as it may be a profession I would want to do in the future as I do IT in school for GCSE. I had an interest for IT at the start of secondary school and hope to do IT for work. I believe that doing work experience at Orbits IT will give me further knowledge into the IT workplace and how it is used in other workplaces. My time at Orbits IT will help me understand the knowledge of IT and everything about it. My aspirations are to be a game developer and I think IT will help me with this profession as I will need to understand the basics of IT to progress in this profession. I enjoy playing games and talking to people as I make them laugh with my jokes. I like games because it helps me calm down as I am focusing on other things. I enjoy eating spicy food as it is different than other food but I won’t eat food that is too spicy. I also enjoy meeting new people as I can also make them laugh with my jokes.

Day 1 –

I started by getting logged in and being shown around the building and shown what they do in this workplace. Then I shadowed one of the employees to be shown the IT workplace for other companies and shown how to install computers for other companies. After that I was given security breach and phishing/smishing/vishing videos and questions to answer. I was then shown that during this work experience I would make my own profile for teams and then I was told that I would be recaching Raspberry Pi and how it works and have to give a report on what it is and how it works. After that I would be making one of my own.

Day 2 –

I came in and started to log back in on the computer. Then I was shown how data is cleared off of hard drives when they don’t need to be used any more. Then I shadowed a member of the team to see what they do on the calling side of things and how they log everything on vie their ticketing system. Then I finished my Raspberry Pi research and what it was about. Then I finished the clearance of the hard drive by taking it out of the machine and taping the letter of removal to it then putting it in a box for later use. Then I was told to look for ideas on what I wanted my Raspberry Pi to be.

Day 3 –

I started the day by getting logged back in. Then I started to clear another hard drive. After that I carried on my research on how to make a retro game machine on Raspberry Pi. After I shadowed another member of the team on the logging tickets side of the IT workplace. Then I started to finish my research on Raspberry Pi. Then I started making the game machine by using a card reader to flash RetroPie onto the SD card.

Day 4 –

I started by logging back in and caught up on what I did yesterday. Then I plugged in the Raspberry Pi machine to test if it worked. After I connected the Raspberry Pi and found a game to download as a ROM. Then I shadowed the team on the calls and logging aspect of things for the rest of the day.

Day 5 –

I started by logging in and plugged the RetroPie in to start it. Then I finished the Raspberry Pi by putting the ROMS onto the machine for the games to work. Then I finished a report on how to make a Retro Game Machine on a Raspberry Pi

Conclusion

Overall I have enjoyed my time here for my work experience and have learnt a lot about IT and how everything works and how issues can be fixed.

Henry Jones.
