Behind the Screens: Get to Know Alex our Operations Officer

Say hello to Alex, our Operations Officer at Orbits. Alex has been with us for 7 years now and began as an IT Support apprentice; he’s come a long way since! As employee number one in the Midlands office, he’s a well known character among our Midlands clients. Get to know him more here…

What do you enjoy most about your work?

“Being an Operations Officer is great; you never know what the day brings, and it allows me to experience all things IT. One moment I could be manning the phones, assisting the helpdesk, or the next second I could be planning projects, or out on site. I’m always learning something new; every day is a school day.”

What’s something you’re proud of achieving within the team?

“I’m currently working towards my Project+ exam, but I have already completed my Network+ exam. This really did help a lot and improved my overall understanding of the network side of things, which is really useful when on-site. Also, with so many projects happening recently, it’s great when we complete them successfully, and the client is happy.”

What do you like to do outside of work?

“Outside of work, I really enjoy all things music. I’m always adding to my record collection and have recently picked up learning how to play acoustic guitar. Other than music, I really enjoy watching movies.”

How has your role evolved since starting here?

“Working with Orbits, I’ve managed to do work in all areas of IT. I first started here on an apprenticeship in January 2019 where I always worked closely with the helpdesk, but I also had the chance to go out on site visits. Since then, I’ve been on 2nd line support, been an engineer and now I work on projects.”

What does a typical workday look like to you?

“When I arrive at work, I always start by checking emails to make sure I’m up to date, then I will make sure all the backups from the night before ran through correctly. We schedule backups on an evening so that it does disrupt our clients throughout their working day.

Sometimes I even may be required to go to site, which could be a whole host of different things.”

How has Orbits IT changed over time?

“Being a part of Orbits Midlands since the start has been a treat. Originally, it was a two man set up working from a small office, and now, we’re in a much larger office, with a workshop which seats 8 people all working across different departments.”

Comments from Alex’s manager, Jim Lewington…

“Alex was employee number one up here in the Orbits IT Midlands office, and it’s been a real pleasure to see him develop and progress through various roles over the last 7 years. From apprentice to a vital part of the Operation Team, Alex embodies everything we want Orbits IT to be – friendly, knowledgeable, honest and able to deliver impeccable customer service. I look forward to seeing how far Alex’s career with Orbits IT can take him.”

Now for the Fun Stuff!

Work hard, play hard — we’ve seen Alex in action, supporting our clients, now let’s peek behind the screen and uncover some of the fun stuff!

If you weren’t working at Orbits, what would you be doing?

“I would quite like to work in the hospitality industry. I’m quite a friendly and chatty person so I think it would have suited me well.”

Do you prefer light mode or dark mode?

“I much prefer dark mode, always. It’s much better.”

If your job had a mascot, what would it be?

“I imagine it would be a small white robot, that is ready to go out and help our clients solve all of their IT queries.”
