Behind the Screens: Get to know Dean one of our Directors

Say hello to Dean, one of the Directors at Orbits IT. Since starting his career at Orbits via work experience in 2012, Dean has done every role you could think of at Orbits. Now, whether he’s building client relationships or supporting the delivery teams behind the scenes, Dean’s all in.

Even since answering many of these questions back in 2021, many changes have happened, but fundamentally Dean still stands by what he said 4 years ago. Now, let’s get to know Dean a little better…

What’s something you’re proud of achieving within the team?

Over the past few years, we’ve been working towards several goals as a business. Most importantly, we’ve achieved employee ownership this year, which is something we’re incredibly proud of, and I’m excited to see how it will benefit both our current and future team. We have some exciting plans ahead, and I’m looking forward to involving the wider team in making it happen. We don’t always get everything perfect, but being honest and upfront builds trust, and the fact that we’ve maintained relationships with clients for over 10 years shows we must be doing something right.

What do you like to do outside of work?

If I’m being honest, I probably work a bit too much, but the truth is, I don’t really see it as “work” though. I genuinely enjoy what I do and really do believe we make a positive impact to our clients’ businesses.

I’ve been with my wife Emma since we were 16, and now we have two sons, Jayden, who’s turning 5 this year, and Rory, who is 18 months. Our weekends are usually packed with family activities like swimming and football. I’m hopeful that in the next couple of years, Jayden will develop an interest in golf, which would give me more chances to get out and play.

How has your role evolved since starting here?

When I first started my career in IT, I really enjoyed helping clients solve their tech problems, and still do. I’ve always been interested in tech and always thought that I’d end up specialising in an area. But as someone who doesn’t like to sit still, so as opportunities came my way, I always jumped at the chance. Going from work experience in 2012 to stepping into the role of Director at 24 in 2016, I embraced the challenge. Now, most of my time is spent building strong client relationships while also working closely with our admin/support and project delivery teams to make sure we’re consistently delivering the level of customer service our clients expect.

How do you think Orbits IT will change over the next 12 months?

2025 marks a new chapter and a huge milestone for Orbits IT. By now, you’ve probably seen that we became an employee-owned business, which happened earlier this year. I genuinely believe this change will help us grow even stronger and build on the solid foundations we’ve already laid. I’m really excited to keep working with our existing clients and help them take advantage of new technology. At the same time, I’m just as keen to work closely with the team as we adapt to the changes that come with employee ownership, supporting each other’s growth and helping everyone see Orbits IT as a bigger part of their future.

What do you think makes Orbits IT unique?

I firmly stand by the comments I made in 2021; exceptional service is absolutely key. I believe it’s been a huge factor in our success with the business still going strong at 16 years on. We keep up regular communication with our clients and ensure that they are always informed of developments within the IT industry. We’re honest and transparent, and we don’t use pushy sales tactics or promote overpriced solutions. We love working with new clients and are in a very fortunate position where we have onboarded several clients in the first half of 2025. It’s also great to be able to say that we are still working with our first-ever client, and many of our clients have been with us for 10+ years.

Now for the Fun Stuff!

Work hard, play hard — we’ve seen Dean in action supporting our clients, now let’s peek behind the screen and uncover some of the fun stuff!

If you weren’t working in IT, what would you be doing?

“I still really enjoy working in IT, but the field has changed a lot over the past 15 years. Technology is evolving faster than ever, AI is everywhere, and cyber threats keep getting more complex. If I were to step away from Orbits IT tomorrow, I’d still want to work in technology—but I’d also be interested in exploring opportunities within the police force.”

Do you prefer light mode or dark mode?

“I’d always pick light mode; dark mode wouldn’t even come close. That’s an easy choice.”

You’re stuck on a desert island with one device — what is it, and how long before it breaks?

“That’d be my ThinkPad. I genuinely believe that the laptop would last for forever.”
