Whats the difference between Windows and Linux?

Of course, everybody knows the average user operating system, Windows. And of course, everybody has heard of Apple. But nobody has heard of or don’t really know much about Linux. What is Linux? Linux is a totally free and advanced operating system that’s based on UNIX. Linux can be found, downloaded, and installed online for anybody who wants to try. Linux has a huge fan-base of people all around the world who contribute into updating the operating system 24/7, which can be one of the reasons that Linux is better than Windows. Unlike Windows, Linux is Open Source, which allows for anybody to configure, to their own personal needs, and can also be fixed by anybody if they notice a bug in the system.

The big difference between Windows and Linux is that Linux gives you full access to the source code, whereas Windows does not. This is because Linux belongs to the GNU Public License that makes sure that anybody can access and alter the code to the kernel that is the foundation of the Linux Operating System.

Another difference of Linux and Windows is their appearance and how they’re both set out. Windows has been the same looking operating system since day one, only tweaking certain things to keep updated with the times, (except for Windows 8). But Linux, depending on the distribution, have always tried to update the appearance and set out as much as they can.

The next difference is the time taken to update the operating systems. Windows have only recently began to make massive update the operating system regularly, and even now not as fast as Linux. Linux, for example update Ubuntu twice a year. Now this can scare many people if their not used how to update the operating system, but I assure you it’s very easy to update. When you’re due an update, you’ll get a pop-up, asking if you’re ready to update to the next system. If you are back-up your files, (Also very easy to do), and click update.

Security while being on the internet has always been a risk while using Windows, but with Linux, it’s almost impossible to catch any kind of bug or virus while being on the internet. Linux has had about 60-100 viruses listed to this date, but none are actively spreading nowadays. Where as Windows is thought to have around 60,000 viruses in Windows, and then Anti Viruses costs around £20-£400.

The price of Windows has always been varied but still extremely expensive, but Linux can be completely free. Obviously there are pay for versions, but they’re normally cheaper that Windows anyway.

There are some drawbacks  from using Linux and one of those is gaming. Very few games can be run on Linux. Some games can be played by using Wine, but even then a very small amount can be played. But this is beginning to change with the program Steam. Steam allows you to buy, install and play games. At the beginning it only supported Windows, Apple, and a very small amount of Linux games. But now with more games branching out to Linux users, the games list for Linux is growing quickly.
